End of Fall Watering and Mulching
Late fall is the perfect time to water deeply and mulch - and your fallen leaves are free mulch if you mow them instead of bagging them.
End of fall and early winter is the perfect time to water your plants: it strengthens root growth for a stronger plant through the winter months. You may have to wait until spring to see positive new growth, but beneath the surface, root growth is taking place.
Heading into winter, mulch all of your plants to give them a nice blanket for the cold. Mulch can go down any time of year, but late fall and early winter are especially helpful, before snow falls and the ground begins to freeze. As the ground freezes and thaws, the mulch keeps biodegrading and providing nutrients - and it fosters the rapid root growth that maximizes your fall watering.
Free mulch, already in your yard
Instead of bagging your fallen leaves, run the lawn mower over them and spread the mulch across your yard, focusing on flower beds, shrubs, and bushes. Spread the leaves in a thin layer first so the mower shreds them cleanly. Do it now and the leaves will have almost completely biodegraded by spring - and you saved both the disposal trip and the store-bought mulch.
